History of SMK King George V Red Crescent Society
The Red Cross Link first started in King George the Fifth National Secondary School, in 1954 headed by Miss J. Rajah with only 20 members. At that time, the society was not yet officially recognized by the British Red Cross until the 16th June 1960 when the Red Cross Link was officially registered and the members officiated by the Secretary General, Mrs. Nourth and the Officer in charge of Training, Mr. Xavier. The registration number for the society was Y2. Training courses were given and the results were satisfying. A total of 17 members who took the Part II First Aid exam passed. A total of 10 proficiency badges were given to the members in 1963.
In 1960, our society was chosen to send exhibits to the International Red Cross Exhibition in New York under the leadership of Mrs. Kasagaratnam and Miss Nomita Paul. One of our members, Yoong Nyen Ling was chosen for an international exchange program with the Australian Red Cross in1968. on the 14th June 1969, Miss Mauren White, an International Field delegate from the International League of Red Cross Societies visited our society. On the 11th January 1970, 4 of our members were chosen to attend the National First Aid exercise in Port Dickson. Section Leader, R. Ragavan took part in the National Youth Leader Camp from the 12th to the 17th of April 1970. In the First Aid Competition between Schools held on the 17th and the 24th May 1970, our society managed to obtain the Director’s Trophy and was chosen to represent the Red Cross Negeri Sembilan Branch in the National First Aid Competition in Kuantan.
Our members also received instruction from various officers of the Red Cross Society, patrons and teachers like Dr. Chung Seat Siak, Mr. Wong Chong Fai, Inche Lassim, Mr. Ung Tat Hean and Mr. Peter Lee who sacrificed much of their time and energy for the society.
On the 10th July 1976, the name of the society was changed from the Malaysian Red Cross Society to the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS).
In 1980, 6 of our members represented the MRCS of Negeri Sembilan to the World Red Cross Honorary Parade in Kuala Lumpur. The honour of organising the Sports Carnival in 1982 for the youth members of the MRCS was given to our society and the event was held successfully. We also took part in the exhibition on the Silver Jubilee Day of the school in 1988.
In 1990, Miss Ng Yoke Leng, a former student of SMKKGV from 1976 to 1977 was posted to this school and became the head teacher advisor. She used to be the Honorary Treasurer of the society in 1977.
Throughout the years, our school team achieved remarkable success in the State level First Aid and Footdrill Competitions as well as IHL Quiz. In 2005, our members were selectedto represent the state in the National First Aid Competitionin 2005 and 2007. The Negeri Sembilan team emerged runners-up. In 2007 our team won the Classical First Aid and Community First Aid categories. In 2004, our school was first in Classical First Aid, Quiz Bee and Leadership. In 2003, our team obtained the highest score in Community First Aid section. In 2004, our Footdrill team made us proud by emerging champion in the footdrill competition. In 2007, our school obtained 1st Runners-up for the footdrill competition.Our members have always performed well in the IHL (International Humanitary Law) Quiz since 1995 and represent the state at the National Level competition in 1995 and 1996.
Our members also participated inthe Biennial National Camps held in carious places throughout the years. We also managed to achieve great results in the International Humanitarian Law Quizzes throughout the years. Members were also chosen to represent the MRCS to international exchange programmes in various countries such as Japan, China, South Korea, Indonesia and Austria.
The first edition of the Memory was published in 1992, followed by the second in 1995, the third in 1997, fourth in 1999, fifth in 2001 and the sixth in 2003.
Our sick bay has now been demolished and we have been put in charge of the new sick room. The room has been equipped with two beds, our first aid supplies, stretchers, blankets, reference books as well as a CPR mannequin that was bought through funds raised during the Flag Day collections. In 2001, our members succeeded in raising funds to buying a new computer which allowed us to start a website of the society which was updated in 2004 and 2007. We have also been given a storeroom in the science complex to store our camping equipment.
The Red Crescent Society of KGV is active in many school, Chapter and Branch activities. The members attend courses and undergo training in order to obtain proficiency badges for First Aid, Footdrill, Red Cross and Red Crescent Education, Camp Craft, Friendship Album, Fire Prevention and First Aid Treatment. Our members frequently perform first aid duties during sporting events in and outside the school, visit hospitals and homes for the aged and disabled and collect donations for disaster victims. In the year 2004, the KGV RC unit was chosen to be the Most Outstanding Unit in the state. Over the years, our youth members were also awarded National and State Red Crescent Award for their contribution to the society.
The Red Crescent Society of KGV has indeed written a long and proud history. This is all due to the hard work and effort of the teachers and members throughout the years. We hope that our current and future members will to strive for excellence as well as uphold the fundamental principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
